New Jersey needs to step it up

In a recent article I found, New Jersey is fighting for gay marriage proposals like states such as California and Maine. Senator Loretta Weinberg, sponsor of the marriage equality bill, is convinced that most New Jersey resisdents do not care about gay marriage. She says they are primarily concered with, “car[ing] about their own marriages, and their ability to support their families.” However, times look troubling as the new senate president, Steve Sweeney, takes office and focuses on his main concern regarding the economy and lack of jobs. A delay in the gay marriage proposal could give republican, Chris Christie, enough time to veto the bill when coming into office in January. Action must be taken in order for same sex marriage to be legalized. Delays only bring opprrotunities to keep the bill opposed.

Catholic Church please tell me this is a joke

I found an article about an archdiocese of the Catholic church in DC stating that it will deny its services to the homeless unless the bill for gay marriage was banned. It makes me furious! I am Catholic myself so to hear that the church would deny helping the needy, makes me sick to my stomach. Jesus always said to help others. He never discriminated and always strived to treat everyone equally. Sometimes I wonder why I call myself Catholic for this reason.

Change.org: opinionated blog but full of heart

Today in english class I stumbled across a website called change.org. It consists of daily entries that address gay rights and the struggles and successes that follow the issue. Some articles that were posted mentioned array of people such as Dolly Parton, Justice Scalia, and even ex-vice president, Dick Cheney. The website it humourous at times but easy to read and speaks about a plethora of topics relating to gay rights. In my opinion, it is a highly influential website–giving a wide variety of examples explaining the discrimination against homosexuals.

I decided to look up the personal stand point about gay marriage of candidates from the previous 2008 presidential election. My findings were not promising. John Mccain and Sarah Palin both agree that marriage should be a union between a man and a woman. Barack Obama and Joe Biden also agree that it should be a sanction between a man and a woman. However, the only difference is that Obama does not believe in a constitutional ban. I don’t quite understand how our president can oppose same-sex marriage, and yet, agree that it should be legalized. It seems contradictory to me, but perhaps it makes sense to him?

California needs one million signatures

An article I found today explains the struggle that gay marriage advocates are facing in California. Last year, the bill, Proposition 8, passed–making a marital union only a sanction between a man and a woman. The bill passed with 52% of the votes–a close victory for social conservatives. However, gay marriage advocates are trying to end the ban with a petition. If the petition receives one million votes by this April, the issue will be put on the November 2010 election ballot. However, many gay marriage supporters want to wait on the petition until a younger generation can vote. Apparently, the support was highest with people who were between the ages of 18-29. Hopefully, gay marriage will be welcomed into the state of California rather than expelled.

New York can’t pull it together

New York’s senate failed to vote on the same-sex marriage bill after Governor David Pateron pleaded for weeks. The senate lacked the 32 votes needed to pass the bill. Paterson promised supporters that the senate would vote on the issue by the end of the year. “I implore them that I would rather see an up or down vote, than no action at all,” the governor said.

I think that the Governor’s statement is pretty powerful. I am very happy with his proactiveness and dedication to this issue. Hopefully, New York will be a same-sex marriage state in the near future.

New York in the Process of Legalizing Same-Sex Marriage

I found this article today from the New York Times which talks about a same-sex marriage bill in Albany. David A. Paterson is calling Albany to legalize the bill. Many supporters of the cause had a set back last week with the state of Maine and have now focused their attention to New York. 32 votes are needed to pass the bill. At this time, supporters of the bill believe that they can count on 25 of the votes at this point in time. They are pushing the passing of this bill this year because the 212 people of legislature face reelection next year. Supporters also say that republican votes are needed for the bill to pass.

I got this email a day or two ago. I thought that it was pretty ironic in light of recent events with my topic being about same-sex marriage and all. Perhaps I will venture over to Bachelor hall and acquire some information for my paper.

What’s Morally Wrong with Homosexuality?

probably not what you think…

Wayne State University Associate Professor Dr. John Corvino will be speaking as a philosopher, a moralist and as a gay rights advocate on the contentiousness of homosexuality. Dr. Corvino will discuss the most popular accusations against homosexuality’s morality and will ultimately argue that homosexuality is not immoral; but rather we have a moral obligation to treat gay people (and all people) fairly.

Where and When: 7 p.m., Thursday Nov. 12 in 101 Bachelor Hall.

Following his lecture there will be a Q&A session with Dr. Corvino.

it’s not “gay” to support same-sex marriage

I decided for my next paper to discuss the pros of same-sex marriage. It is a subject I feel very strongly about. I think a person should be able to be with who ever they want to be regardless of sex. I don’t think it is right to tell a person they can’t be with another person. I especially hate when people say gay persons should “control” their gayness or that it is able to be contained. I truly believe people are homosexual regardless of what they want and people cannot judge them for that.
